The Story Behind Battle of the Bullies by Fenyx Blue

Battle of the Bullies

By Fenyx Blue

When you are a teacher, some days you wish you were deaf or blind.  I am a teacher which means I have heard or seen many things that most parents or people would not believe happen in schools.  The gossip, the fights, and the bullying make me nauseous sometimes because I wish school was a utopia or at least a place where kindness was the norm.  The idea for Battle of The Bullies was born when a group of sixth grade girls were tormenting our school with their misbehavior.  They had developed a reputation that was known through sixth, seventh and eighth grade as naughty girls.  The Dimes in my story are mean on purpose just like some of the students I have encountered over the years.  The Robertson triplets are kind on purpose just as some of my students have chosen to be over the years.  The Robertson triplets are based on the members of my club, Team Bully-Free Forever (Team BFF) who volunteer to be kind each year.  These are students who are about building relationships, showing appreciation, and creating a positive climate at our school.  A school has kids who are sometimes like the Dimes and are at times like the Robertson triplets.  I wanted to provide a story that would spark a dialogue.  We can learn from both sides.  What makes someone a bully?  a target? an upstander?  One in five kids are bullied each day.  As an educator, writing Battle of The Bullies is my effort to decrease that number through providing opportunities for candid conversations.  A book is a key to many doors.  I self-published Battle of The Bullies hoping to unlock a door to unity, tolerance, friendship and acceptance.  If there are people in the class of life who are deaf or blind, it is time that they hear a story based on truth and see the impact of bullies on self-esteem, mental health, and the culture of a school.

Ebony, Eris, and Emani Robertson have been through so much more than most high school freshmen. When they were younger, they survived a school shooting that killed their friend and left their oldest sister unable to speak. After giving homeschooling a try, they enroll in a promising new academy, hoping for the best.

The Robertson triplets soon discover, however, that their new classmates are anything but kind. A mysterious group of bullies known as the Dimes rules the hallways and spreads fear everywhere they go. All three sisters end up being targets of the gang and have to find a way to defend themselves. Can they bring down the Dimes while trying to make it through the ninth grade?

The Story Behind Banewind by M.B. Chapman

I have always been a fantasy nerd at heart! Growing up, I found myself engrossed in anything that had to do with magic, wizards, dragons, or complex story lore. From novels to video games, my childhood—like so

many others—was dedicated to the enthralling stories of Harry Potter, Twilight, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Hunger Games. If my nose wasn’t buried deep into the pages of a good book, you’d probably find me playing The Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft, Pokémon, or a myriad of other adventures that proved to be a dazzling and addictive escape from reality. It was happiness. It was rewarding. And it was an integral part of what made me who I am today.

Early on in my life, I also discovered my love and admiration for writing. Even before I was properly educated in language arts, I would spend countless hours drawing whimsical tales, spinning the stories in my mind and rehashing them to anyone who would listen. Imagination is a parallel of reality, the bridge between the fantastic and the objective world, a way to express yourself and deepen the bond of existence. To me, creating stories was one of the most remarkable things someone could accomplish, and I strived to achieve that for myself. But not only for me. I did it because I had a voice, and I wanted to share it with the world. So, several years ago, I set out on writing a novel that encompassed everything I loved about fantasy. I wanted to write a story that was gripping—filled with adventure, romance, and magic. I wanted to create a landscape of characters that were relatable, with emotional depth and complexity to them. I wanted to create a world with its own lore, its own identity, and its own story to tell. I wanted to bring imagination to life. And thus, Banewind was born.

It was crucial to create a story that fell into the young adult fantasy genre, as this is what I believe to be one of the most important parts of literature out there. Young adults, teens, and children are the future of writing—they are the dream makers and pivotal to our societal world. Providing material to fuel the imaginative mind is a powerful tool, and I knew this is where my talents best fell. I created Genevieve DeWinter, the story’s main protagonist and first-person narrator, to give an anchor people can relate to. She is smart, strong, and kind. She is independent, yet she appreciates the values of love and friendship. Banewind is a series that will delve into many different issues people face in life, all while providing intricate, deep tales that are woven in the realms of magic and the extraordinary. There are moments of triumph, and there are moments of loss. There are times of new life and hope, and there are times of death and grief. But most importantly, there is the always evolving pure imagination that will keep the readers immersed and feel as though they are right there in the story themselves. Whether it’s walking with Genevieve as she learns about the history of her family or helping her get to safety as she navigates the perils of the Dark Lady and the Voidweaver army, the story will be embedded into the readers’ hearts and minds, and the fantasy will live on eternally in the pages.

And so, to all the readers out there, I wish you nothing but the best. Take care, enjoy, and remember to dream forever.

Warm regards,

M.B. Chapman

About the Book

Almost two weeks ago I was just a normal girl getting ready to start my senior year of high school, deciding where I wanted my life to go. And now?

I’ve kissed a boy. I’ve been to another world. I’ve seen death.

And I don’t know what my life’s become.

Banewind tells the spellbinding story of 18-year-old Genevieve DeWinter, a typical high school girl who finds herself entangled in the throes of adventure, romance, and survival after discovering the existence of a group of magical beings known as Formulists and their co-existing world, Banewind.

With the arrival of several mages in her hometown of Parma, Ohio, Genevieve soon learns that these extraordinary secrets are rooted deep within her family’s history when it is revealed her deceased mother was a heroic warrior in a long lineage of female protectors called the Holy Guardian. Now, a vengeful group of Formulists known as the Voidweavers have returned and set their sights on Genevieve, believing she might be the next Holy Guardian and the key to awakening their fallen leader, the Void King, who had been destroyed by Genevieve’s mother when she sacrificed herself a decade earlier to save Banewind and all of humanity from an unthinkable evil.

With the help of new allies, Genevieve must fight to stay alive as she unravels the mystery and danger that have shattered the stability of the life she once knew before the Voidweavers succeed in shadowing the world in chaos and darkness once again.

The Story Behind Someone's Story by B.A. Bellec

I am going to start with the publishing side. This was my first book and I don’t have a background in writing so I was really breaking new ground. I did try to query a few places about 6 months before I
published but I wasn’t ready. Not surprised none of them got back to me. I eventually got a little frustrated around December and set a deadline for myself to instead self-publish. I made so many changes in those 4 months. Ultimately I like aspects of self-publishing but I lack exposure. Working on that part right now.

My inspiration came from lots of different places. The book I like to cite as being the most influential is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The way Stephen Chbosky uses a journal entry to deliver a story is similar to the raw narration I choose to go with in my project.

Most of my writing was almost therapy. I was writing because I didn’t understand some of the things that happened in my life. Not everything in this book happened to me. I felt like it was unfair that I had such an easy life. Writing was a way for me to reconcile that feeling. By putting those thoughts on the page, it was almost like a do-over on the moment in my life when I didn’t do the right thing.

My editor helped me grow a few of the characters and really pushed me to finish the project. I had shared an early version. Her guidance was critical to me writing my last 20K words and then her encouragement is why I pushed myself to go down the publishing path. I didn’t want to leave this thing 80% done once she was involved. I had to finish for her.

The other thing I will say. There are people everywhere. Everyone has a story. Just talk to them. Little pieces of all the people I have ever met ended up in here.

About the Book

In his debut endearing coming-of-age book, B.A. Bellec writes about a group of weirdos that find and save each other from the dark depths of their minds. Someone’s Story is literally Someone’s story, as in a first-person narrative of a teenager that calls himself Someone. As he struggles to find a new footing in a new space, we encounter the many ups and downs of modern teenage life, the difficulties that adjusting to adult feelings bring, and a few tear-jerking surprises along the way.
Littered with music, mental health, friendship, loss, meditation, advice, pop culture, and even inspiring an EP, there is so much nostalgia, inspiration, and depth here it is hard to absorb it all. Cozy up somewhere warm and enjoy!

“B. A. Bellec has crafted a masterpiece of emotive and well-rounded young adult fiction.”
K.C. Finn – Author

“The variety of personages, situations, and mental illnesses represented allows all readers to relate to this book and take something away from reading! This novel is on our list of all-time favourites!”
International Girls and Books

“Someone’s Story is a beautiful novel, written in great prose, very descriptive, and filled with insights about life. The author does an incredible job with themes of family, friendship, bullying, and personal development. It felt like I was reading a portion of my emotions and myself in Someone’s Story.”

The Story Behind How The Deer Moon Hungers by Susan Wingate

My husband, Bob and I took an evening walk. It was thirty-four days before my Mom died. She was terribly sick by then. We don’t typically walk in the evenings but for some reason―probably, just to get out of the house, leaving Mom with a caregiver―we decided to just take off on a stroll westward
from our home on a road that wraps around a slice of water in North Puget Sound called the Olympic Straits. Walks down that particular stretch of road elicit tons of fodder for my stories. It was along that same road when The Deer Effect idea came into being.

Anyway, we were heading back home after being out for a half-hour, walking east on that same road when the moon decided to make an appearance. It was as full and yellow as I’ve ever seen. It looked like a huge beach ball made of cheese. And in a breath, MacKenzie Fraser zipped by me on her bike―figuratively, that is. In my mind, she and her sister seven-year-old sister, Tessa were racing down the hill on that same road in the direction of the moon when Tessa skidded to a stop nearly making Mac run over her. The discourse between them took on an excited and intimate tone. And there I am with Bob and we’re walking closer and closer to them. I mean, I was listening in, eavesdropping on what they were saying. It was all kid issues…

“You nearly made me run into you, brat!” From Mac.
Nothing from Tessa. Tessa was staring up at the moon. Gaping, really.
Finally, after a barrage of insults from Mac, Tessa says, “See the deer in the moon, Mac?”
Mac answers, “There’s no deer, dork. There’s a man but no deer.”
Tessa now, “Wonder if the deer’s hungry?”

After that scene played out for me, I knew I had to write their novel. That scene occurs in Chapter One of HOW THE DEER MOON HUNGERS. And the title went through several revisions with working titles: The Secret of Deer Moon (not bad), What the Deer Moon Hungers For (I hated the dangling participle and it’s quite a mouthful), Why the Deer Moon Hungers (okay, getting closer), then it takes a hard left to Moon Spyer (what the?), and finally the published title of How the Deer Moon Hungers, which seems to sum up everything I was trying to accomplish with the other title variants. It got a contract as Moon Spyer and we talked about changing the title after the ink was dry both ways. But I knew Moon Spyer wouldn’t be the final title. I mean, just say it a couple times. It’s awkward and the word “spyer” isn’t a real word. I had to force it into my dictionary. And believe me, it wasn’t going easily.

I guess what I want you to know most about this story is that at its core DEER MOON is about two sisters―one who lives and one who doesn’t.

Thank you for allowing me the platform to talk about my latest novel. I hope you love Mac and Tessa as much as I do. Sincerely, Susan Wingate.

The Story Behind The Witch Port Video Game by Leonard Bassed

I self-published The Witch Port Video Game, though I didn’t set out to write a book. I wrote the pilot script first, when I returned home to South Africa after a trip to Los Angeles California USA. While in the US I took classes at the Acting Corps where I got the chance to meet and interact with different people from around the world. Creatively I really thrived in LA, and being a writer/actor, I took the whole experience in.

Upon my return home to South Africa, I was so excited and eager to start the auditioning process and
implement all the new tricks I had picked up in La-La-Land. I wasted no time in submitting myself for theatric representation, to all the big talent agencies in town. When I didn’t get the responses, I was hoping for I decided to approach smaller agencies that specialize in character actors and models. I got signed to a smaller agency that will remain nameless and got the chance to start auditioning again. I got frustrated that when I got sent out to audition, the roles I’d go out for weren’t reflective of the kinds I hoped to book, this realization was the catalyst that began my writing journey.

I wrote the pilot script which I planned to pitch to TV/Film producers in LA, feeling my project is better suited for an international audience, its been my experience that the South African market favor Soap Opera’s or procedural dramas over SCIFI or supernatural fiction. On completion of my pilot I’d grown too attached to the characters and the wonders of their world. This obsession compelled me to adapt my script into a novel, the first installment in a series of books.

The Story Behind Reflections by Jena Baxter

I wanted to write a novel for Hans Christian Andersen's, The Little Matchgirl, so I researched Victorian London, to get a stronger understanding of society at that time.

The grieving process of the era left me intrigued. I read that when someone died, the family stopped the clocks, opened the windows, and covered the mirrors. This kept the recently departed from becoming confused and then trapped in a mirror. my imagination went crazy with possibilities.

In the end I had to begin in the Regency Era, to match the historical timeline properly.

After I finished the novel I attended a writer's conference and learned about self-publishing. It wasn't my original intention, but I decided to try it.

About The Book:

Title: Reflections
Author: Jena Baxter
Publisher: Independent Self Publishing / Jenabaxterbooks
Publication Date: October 31, 2013
Pages: 320
ISBN: 978-0991167715
Genre: YA / Historical Fantasy

When Juliette has a domestic servant beaten for pursuing a young man above her station, she finds herself cursed by a witch to live in a world behind her own mirror. She is unable to leave except on the first night of a full moon.

Juliette is forced to seek what food and shelter the new world provides with the help of a unicorn, a man who is half bear, and a centaur. Together they struggle to survive against lions, wolves, and the challenges of watching their friends live and die through the back of the mirror, as their own world, family and friends moves on without them.

Reflections begins in Regency era London, and ends in Clover Springs, California, an all but abandoned Gold Rush town.

A tale of love, friendship, and facing unavoidable challenges.

The Story Behind Appaloosa Summer by Tudor Robins

Like many novels, Appaloosa Summer started with a kernel of truth, or fact, and grew from there. I started horseback riding as soon as my parents would let me; I was eight years old when I took my first lesson, and I loved it right away.

Riding, for me, was something done seriously and carefully. There were many safety, and etiquette rules to follow. I wanted to learn, to please my coach, and to win ribbons.

Then my family started spending part of our summers in a cottage on an island in the St. Lawrence River, and I got to ride in an entirely new way.

Our cottage was surrounded by a huge farm, with many horses, and kids about my age. In the morning I’d take a path through the trees to their barn, and everybody would grab a horse. Sometimes I’d end up with a huge Belgian, with feet the size of Frisbees, sometimes with a pony so small my legs almost dragged on the ground, and one summer I rode a mare whose foal followed us everywhere we went.

There were no rules, other than having fun, and no etiquette either. We galloped across fields, swam the horses in the river, took them on a small ferry to another island and, when we were thirsty, knocked on the closest door and asked for lemonade, since the farm kids were related to pretty much everybody around.

It was eye-opening for me, and I loved every minute of it.

The question for me, when writing Appaloosa Summer, was what would happen if a girl from the city came to a rural island for the whole summer? What if she became part of the community?

So, while the story is fiction, it’s based on that very personal experience of mine, and it grew from those “what if?” questions.

As to publishing it, this was a very special book to me, so I wanted to make sure it was accessible to as many readers as possible.

After publishing my first novel, Objects in Mirror, with a publishing house, I came to believe self-publishing Appaloosa Summer was the best way to make sure it was available all over the world, at an affordable price. I also felt it would give me the best chance to reach readers directly.

So far, that’s been my exact experience. Readers have been intelligent, thoughtful, and creative with their reviews of the book. It’s been a pleasure to read what they have to say, and to have a chance to connect with many of them, and I look forward to self-publishing the follow-up to Appaloosa Summer – Book Two of my Island Trilogy, tentatively titled Again, Someday.

About The Book:

Sixteen-year-old Meg Traherne has never known loss. Until the beautiful, talented horse she trained herself, drops dead underneath her in the show ring. Jared Strickland has been living with loss ever since his father died in a tragic farming accident. Meg escapes from her grief by changing everything about her life; moving away from home to spend her summer living on an island in the St. Lawrence River, scrubbing toilets and waiting on guests at a B&B. Once there, she meets Jared; doing his best to keep anything else in his life from changing. When Jared offers Meg a scruffy appaloosa mare out of a friend’s back field, it’s the beginning of a journey that will change both of them by summer’s end.

The Story Behind The Adventures of Rupert Starbright Book 3: The Ghost of Winter Joy by Michael DiCerto

I think many kids look at their immediate world and find it boring. As a kid I escaped into the world of my imagination regularly. Though I did enjoy the characters and color of growing up in a very colorful (albeit sometimes dangerous) neighborhood of East Harlem, NYC, having a very active imagination and a slice of heaven that was my backyard to escape to was a real blessing. In the summer I would climb my crab apple tree and pick the sour fruit that most hated but I loved. In the autumn the carpet of leaves was a blast to kick around in. When the snow came, igloos and snowball fights ruled the day. One day I was tossing snowballs at my sister who was teasing me from the bathroom window, My first three shots missed- hitting the window as it slammed shut. But the fourth ball hit its target. Problem was it turned out to be my Dad!

When Spring returned I would help my parents plant flowers and vegetables in the small plot of soil that received enough sun. The sting of snowballs long melted to memory.

Although I grew up with four sisters and enough friends, I often enjoyed being alone in my world. Stories would fill my head. Worlds morph and form before me. So jump ahead a bunch of years where I found myself in a place in life where the job was a huge cloud of utter boredom. My personal Graysland. An escape was often the beauty of Central Park. So it was on an autumn day, when endless piles of leaves crunched under my feet, when the world of Rupert Starbright was born.He would live in a boring, gray world where the adults were more concerned with raking leaves than the minds of their children.

Rupert would be lured by the song- the music and the colors of a stranger who descends from the sky. Looking back it is obvious that Pie O’Sky was a rock star. Music has always been my greatest inspiration. Especially classic rock. Pie O’Sky with his Jimmy Page hair and Jimi Hendrix clothing was that same musical muse.

He would provide the door to adventure. As a writer- we are always looking for that open door. That chance to get our work seen.

The-Door-to-Far-MystMy first Rupert book was THE DOOR TO FAR-MYST. The publisher (Zumaya Thresholds) felt it would be better to split the book into two parts. Thus, the SECRET OF MY-MYST was born of book one. The reviews were great.

I knew Rupert needed more adventures and I would happily send him on them. I discussed a novella with my publisher- one with a holiday theme that could be released in December. Well, the novella became a novel. THE GHOST OF WINTER JOY. This story puts Rupert on an adventure where he will face a ghostly horror and get some clues as to why his home town is so boring. All while desperately trying to save the memory of ancient holiday that the people of Graysland once celebrated.

Perhaps is most exciting and interesting adventure yet, THE GHOST OF WINTER JOY, I hope, will join many others as a tale to be told every holiday season. A story to bring color into the lives of kids of all ages.
Will there be more adventures for Rupert Starbright. I imagine so…
