The Story Behind Dragged Down Deep by Michael Okon

The Story Behind Dragged Down Deep
By Michael Okon

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking the time and reading what was in my head just a few months ago.

I’ve been writing as far back as I could remember, specifically screenplays. After I learned about self-publishing, I began turning my scripts into novels under a pen name. Specifically, for my book Monsterland, in 2015, I was watching an 80s & 90s movie marathon with my kids – The Goonies, Gremlins, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, etc… I wrote the ghost novels, I wrote the witches novels, but I wanted to write a monster novel. After watching all these films, it literally popped into my head – why isn’t there a theme park with zombies. I called my brother and told him about my idea and he flat out said no. It has to be a theme park with werewolves, vampires AND zombies. I started beating out the story that night.

My mom is my publicity manager and she blitzed the bloggers with my book. That fall I was reading a book called Selling a Screenplay by Syd Field. In the book, there was an entertainment attorney named Susan Grode who seemed very knowledgeable about the publishing and film industry. I told myself, when I receive my first contract, I’m going to reach out to her to see if she could help me. About two months later, I received a post on Facebook from an agent in London who asked to represent me. I said sure and asked him to send me a contract. I emailed Susan and introduced myself and mentioned that I had someone who wanted to rep me and I was hoping she could read this contract. She told me before I sign with this London agent, why don’t I meet her friend in Brooklyn, an agent named Nick Mullendore with Vertical Ink Literary Agency. I met Nick for lunch and he signed me that day as his client. That evening, Susan brought me on as her client as well. Nick began trying to sell my book Monsterland to the big publishers and, as expected, it was rejected. Throughout his attempts of selling, he had a call with a film agent and he was pitching her a romance novel. She said she wasn’t really into romance and was looking for something with monsters. He sent her my book Monsterland, she read it over a weekend, and we had a call that Monday. She told Nick and me if we get the book published, she will get it into a producer’s hands to make into a film. Nick found a publisher called WordFire Press owned by Kevin J. Anderson, who has written all the Star Wars and Dune canon books. WordFire signed me to a two-book deal for Monsterland 1 & 2. After the deal was signed, my film agent did what she promised and got my book into the hands of a billion-dollar grossing producer who is now shopping my book to certain studios.  In two years, I went from a self-published author, to a published author with a literary agent, an entertainment attorney, a film agent, a two-book publishing deal, a publicist, and a producer who is interested in turning my book to a film. It’s been one wild ride, to say the least.

Logan Osborne has spent his life chasing the shadows of the past.

As a child, he watched helplessly as his father was snatched from a fishing boat by what he swore was a mermaid. No one believed him then. No one believes him now.

Determined to prove that mythical creatures exist, Logan is drawn back to the small coastal town where his nightmares began after another mysterious disappearance stirs the waters.

Teaming up with his pragmatic colleague Elliot Sheppard and his fiercely loyal friend Penny Swanson, Logan dives headfirst into an adventure packed with danger and deception. As they dig deeper, the trio faces resistance at every turn—a secretive agency with its own agenda, a suspiciously unhelpful police force, and Logan’s old flame, who may know more than she’s letting on.

What they uncover is far darker and more terrifying than Logan ever imagined: the truth about his father, the secrets of Minatuck, and the horrifying reality of the Mermaid of the Hamptons.

Will Logan and his friends expose the lies that have haunted him for years, or will they be Dragged Down Deep into the swampy, secretive underbelly of a town that guards its mysteries with deadly intent?

Dragged Down Deep is available at Amazon.

The Story Behind The Vision of the Quest by Kimberly Cole

The Story Behind The Vision of the Quest
By Kimberly Cole

It’s funny how inspiration struck for The Vision of the Quest. I had mentioned to my husband that I’d love to write a book similar to C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. It was a deep desire of my heart, and through this process, I’ve come to realize just how powerful our words are. What we hope for, believe in faith, and speak aloud can manifest.

One night, my nine-year-old daughter Meghan woke up excited and full of energy. She exclaimed, ‘Mom, I had this awesome dream about a mother named Liana and her three kids—Alicia, Roger, and Emily! In the dream, Liana’s car broke down in front of a large mansion, where a bald-headed butler greeted them at the door. There was also an evil man named Sir Bronze Pierce, dressed all in black!

The amazing thing is, I never shared my heart’s desire with my daughter, but the Lord, who knows all things, gave my daughter Meghan the beginning of an adventurous story. That’s where it all began. From there, I give God all the credit, for I could not have completed The Vision of the Quest without Him.

Liana, a widowed mother of Alicia and Emily, is in a desperate situation. After her car breaks down on a desolate road, she feels lucky to have her daughter’s friend Roger with them. As they begin a trek to seek help, Liana has no idea that she, her daughters, and Roger are all about to embark on the adventure of their lives. After the group finally reaches the vast doors of a mansion in the middle of nowhere, they are greeted by an eerie butler, who leads them to Sir Bronze Pierce, the master of the mansion who soon captivates Liana with his charming personality. Roger and the rest of the group are slowly drawn, one-by-one, through a portal into a different time, where they are soon thrust into a battle with a wicked warlord whose ultimate goal is complete domination. It is up to Alicia, Roger, and Emily to bring back harmony and peace to these strange kingdoms. As the three young people seek the help of the king’s court — a loyal Griffin, a powerhouse rock man, and other valiant warriors– they must unite against the forces of a warlord intent on destroying anyone who stands in his way.

Praise:

“During the late hours of the night, Roger woke up abruptly. He thought he was dreaming; an evil presence drew him out of his bed and into the hallway. He walked through all kinds of twists and turns and stopped suddenly in front of a door needing a repainting…In the center was a narrow slide with a small opening. ‘Look and see! Look and see!’ the voices called him out and urged him on. Bit-by-bit, Roger looked into the slot…” So begins a suspenseful, page-turning, dark fantasy read in the spirit of work like Terry Brooks, Stephen King, Gary Dauberman, and even the author’s literary inspiration, C.S. Lewis, who shares the author’s faith.

What Kimberly Cole does not have in terms of out-and-out, one hundred percent originality, she more than makes up for in terms of overall ideological presentation, characterization, and rich, immersive worldbuilding. You really feel like you’re experiencing a fast-paced fever dream if you delve into the text. There really is this sense of total, emotive immersion in the stakes at play, likely coming from the decidedly personal origins of the work. Cole herself clearly has decided to make this her passion project. The choices feel as much informed by superb storytelling technique, as they do by Cole’s unique vision. Cole herself states the following: “(The Vision of the Quest) was a test for me to write. At times, I struggled to tell my story…pushing on always, faith pulled me through to my goal. This book is special to me because I was talking with my husband sharing how I would love to write a book like Narnia with three children…The next morning my daughter, Meghan, had awoken from her sleep. She came to me excited saying, ‘Mom, I had an awesome dream with three children and their mother stranded on a dark road. I came to a mansion and knocked on a door when a butler answered’. She said there was an evil man named Sir Bronze Pierce and then I had taken the story from there. I could not have completed this book first without God’s help and my husband’s support.”

Indeed, Sir Bronze Pierce is one of the juiciest dark fantasy villains to grace the pages of a work like this in some time. He has this kind of dramatic, old-fashioned menace that at once retains a good sense of fun, while not shying away from what the narrative needs to be. I’m a big fan of a good, scary villain to raise the stakes for our heroes and heroines, and Sir Bronze Pierce is no exception to this. Again, this kind of quality likely comes from the work being intensely personal for Cole. Core aspects of the narrative are inspired by Cole’s daughter’s dreams, which adds a poetic and innocent quality to even the darker aspects of the story, and necessarily menacing scenes. The Christian element is also intriguing. More often than not, popular genre work with Christian themes tends to lean into distinctly paranormal, if not paranormal horror stories. Seeing something appealing to a wide audience with Christian themes is compelling, and a bit different from the usual, pantheistic nature of fantasy. — Cyrus Rhodes

The Vision of the Quest is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Ewings Publishing LLC.

The Story Behind Ring of Rosin by Nancy Golden

The Story Behind Ring of Rosin
By Nancy Golden

Ring of Rosin is the second book in the Dynamis Novels and continues the story of young King Rugal. It was the natural next book in my Dynamis series. In Book 1 we learn about the main character and his journey to become king of Elayas. We find out about the three symbols attached to the true ruler of Elayas: the Sword of Fate, the Ring of Rosin, and the Key of Power. The three books in the Dynamis trilogy each draw special significance from one of these symbols. I had a lot of fun with the characters and plot twists, and I think you will, too.

The first draft of the first book in the Dynamis Novels was written in 1986. Last year I took the draft from so long ago and worked it into what became the final manuscript of Sword of Fate. Interestingly, I had also written the first three chapters of Ring of Rosin back then. While it has evolved into a very different book from what I envisioned so long ago, the inspiration from those first three chapters is intact and drives the plot line. Once I started work on Ring of Rosin, it moved rapidly, and I completed the final version six months after I returned to those three chapters. Ring of Rosin officially launched on September 2, 2024.

I am a big fan of encouraging others to open their hearts and minds to people who are different from them, especially people from different cultures. We have so much to learn from each other and even though it can be uncomfortable, we are richer for doing so. We often find we have much more in common than we are different. That is definitely a theme that is explored in Ring of Rosin. My characters go through a myriad of challenges, but they learn and grow from them.

I decided to self-publish for numerous reasons. I love having the control of my content and book covers. I appreciate scheduling my own publication dates and it is much faster than if it was on a traditional publisher’s schedule. I must say it is a tremendous amount of work – I have hard-earned knowledge that allows me to do what needs to be done. It is also very expensive. I am very committed to representing myself and my books with integrity and to do the best job that I am able. This means I hire beta readers to read early versions and provide feedback. This means that I hire a professional editor and even after my final draft is edited, I go through it a final time before publishing. This means I hire a professional graphic artist that (with my input) designs the cover. All of these are very expensive and time-consuming, but they are worth it because the book that you, dear reader, will have in your hands, is the best possible version that I can produce.

To sum up why I write: I love having a positive impact on my readers. When my writing touches someone’s heart, or they find themselves immersed in the story as an entertaining haven away from the trials of this world, or the message in its pages provides someone with hope – it doesn’t matter how hard it gets (and being an author gets very hard)– it makes being an author worthwhile. Ring of Rosin was written with that in mind. My hope is that it is a “light in the darkness” that entertains you and brightens your day.

The Story Behind Ten Gold Coins by Joni Parker

The Story Behind Ten Gold Coins: Book Two of The Golden harvest Series
By Joni Parker

The inspiration for my book, Ten Gold Coins, came from two sources—the story of Judas and his betrayal of Jesus for 30 silver coins, and second, The Hunger Games. A long time ago when I was in Sunday School, I was shocked when I heard the story of Judas and his act of betrayal. But over time, I’ve learned it happens all the time. But how would my main character, Alex, react when it happens to her?

My second source of inspiration came from The Hunger Games in which the twelve districts must pay an annual tribute to Panem. In The Golden Harvest, the tribute is in the form of gold instead of people, and it only comes around every four thousand years. The next tribute will be for a hundred million knots of gold due in the year 12,000, but it comes early. My main character, Alex, manages the program, even though she has no control over it.

Once I finished writing the book, I self-published it on Amazon (kdp.com), since I don’t have an agent. Although this limits me to selling on Amazon, I’m okay with that. It’s easy to do, and Amazon has a huge market share. Besides, it’s free.

The site (kdp.com) was simple to use. The first step was to open an account. After that, I followed the step-by-step directions to set up the book. Note: the title and series title can’t be changed once it’s there, so if that happens, start over. To format the book, I used Kindle Create, available on kdp.com, instead of paying someone to do it for me. It included pages for front and back matter, as well as a Table of Contents based on chapter headings. I could even add images and edit it after it’s uploaded. I don’t pay for a cover designer either, and used Cover Creator (also on kdp.com) to design it. It can be done with or without an image.

After a few more steps for pricing and distribution, the ebook was done and published. The printed version took a little longer, so I could get a proof copy. After I approve it, I can purchase author copies at cost. What a deal!

The Story Behind Hush Hush City by Jo Denning

The Story Behind Hush Hush City by Jo Denning

I’ve always loved fantasy and fairy tales. As I got older, I also developed an interest in mystery and darker, grittier stories. Urban fantasy is a good mix of both. Setting the Saoirse Reilly series in an urban fantasy world gave me the opportunity to do some genre-bending and subvert readers’ expectations. I won’t give too much detail about that to avoid spoilers!

I began writing Dead Blood City, the first book in the Saoirse Reilly series, while working in a psychiatric hospital at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and following the death of a thirteen-year-old patient by suicide. The magic and monsters in Reilly’s world are metaphors for the very real evil and darkness that exists in our world. The painful experiences of my characters are things that real people go through every day. Unfortunately, treatment is not always enough to help them escape the darkness inside their own minds.

I always knew Dead Blood City would have a sequel. In Hush Hush City, I wanted to address some of the questions readers had about Reilly’s heritage and her burgeoning powers. Other inspirations included Norse myths of the undead, the overlap of Viking and Irish culture, and the long, troubled history between Ukraine and Russia. But my overarching inspiration for the book was imagining someone presented with a series of distinct choices and choosing wrong every single time. Where would they end up?

Writing Hush Hush City allowed me to continue a journey of healing and self-forgiveness that I started in my first novel. Reilly is on a treacherous and painful path but we are all walking it together. When I was working on DBC at work, in waiting rooms, at airports, and on my couch, I often wondered if there was any reason for it. And, sometimes, I felt very alone in a very dark place. Now the sun is shining through my windows, I have hundreds of readers, and I’m publishing the sequel. I hope that you, too, will read and grow.

If you haven’t read Dead Blood City yet, email subscribers to my website www.JoDenning.com can grab a free e-copy. Hush Hush City is available on Amazon for Kindle or paperback. I love hearing from readers so feel free to reach out! In the meantime, I’m hard at work on the third installment, Black Sight City, so named because it will be the darkest yet. This will be a major turning point for the series. For those wanting (demanding) more about Reilly’s heritage and the mysterious world we’ve only seen in flashbacks, this is the book for you! But be careful what you wish for. It is always darkest before dawn.
