The Story Behind Reflections of an Anxious African American Dad by Eric L. Heard

REFLECTIONS OF AN ANXIOUS AFRICAN AMERICAN DAD

By Eric L. Heard

Reflections of An Anxious African American Dad is my first book and I came up with the idea of writing my book after having a life changing incident with my son. I discuss that incident in the book because it was such a powerful moment for me that really got me thinking about doing something different, in terms of my thinking and interacting with my son. The ability to write a book was initially an attempt to communicate with my son in a way that I was not able to express verbally in the past. As I was writing the book, there was the thought that there must be other dads out there dealing with some of the same issues and maybe I could help them as they are trying to figure everything out for their family.

After writing the book and having a rough draft, it just sat in a folder on my computer for about six months. I was really scared about publishing about it because I was very intimidated about the publishing process. As being a reader of very good books, there was the thought that I could never publish as an author with the book that I wrote. When the pandemic started to become apparent in the United States, I had a fear that I would not live long enough to publish my book. It became my mission to publish my book, so that if something did happen to me, my son could have this first book to remember me by and could give some insight into how I was acting as a Dad. The idea of writing was my attempt at really pushing myself in a life of restraint and jumping out there for the world to judge, rather positively or negatively.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the The Story Behind the Book and Pump up Your Book for having the opportunity to write this blog post and talking to readers. I would like to thank the reader for possibly reading my book and hopefully, a review.

The purpose of this book is an awkward discussion of Eric Heard’s life to his son. He talks about his life in a candid way that tries to explain his anxiety as an African American dad. It is an open and honest account of his life through the life of a child that has been through a lot in his life. It is a reflection on his life that has been shaped by his childhood experiences.
