The Story Behind The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker by Fletcher Best

The Eight Fingered Fiend of Lake Porker 7The initial idea for the book came from a combination of learning about the sacred time-honored art of Japanese tentacle porn (from Anthony Bourdain’s travel show, not from me searching for porn on Google – honest!) and as-yet-unconfirmed reports of freshwater octopi in certain lakes in Oklahoma.  From that concept, it was simply a matter of inserting (pun intended) a sexually skilled and amorous octopus into the lives of the characters one might actually find in a small-town community in Central Texas.  While the characters in the book are all fictional, some were created with certain real-life people in mind.

While small Texas towns may seem quiet and  innocent on the surface, they can hold a lot of secrets.  In fact, the real-life scenic Canyon Lake area, on which the town of Lake Porker is very loosely based, is supposedly quite a hotbed of less-than-wholesome activities including methamphetamine production and swinging (as in spouse-swapping, not swinging from ropes into the water, although that’s a common past-time too).  Unfortunately, such towns often still have a prominent streak of racism running through them just below the surface – or right on the surface as the case may be, and that figures prominently in the story as well.

Finally, while the titular character is not human, the book is really about people.  Although the story is intended to be pretty outrageous, I’ve tried to keep the human characters at least somewhat realistic in the ways they behave and interact with each other.  As in real life, there’s good people doing bad things, bad people doing (sort of) good things, smart people doing stupid things, and stupid people doing extremely stupid things (while smart people sometimes do stupid things, it has been my experience that stupid people rarely do smart things, and it is thus in the book).  It is my hope that readers will find the human interactions not only humorous, but touching at times as well.
