The Story Behind The Morning Mind by Dr. Robert Carter III & Dr. Kirti Salwe Carter

We had been thinking about writing this book, The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life, for quite a long time. Based on the idea that productive early mornings are imperative and that “building a solid foundation for beginning your day will help you achieve success in every area of your life.
As a couple with years of expertise and personal experience in human performance, medicine, and wellness, we figured there was a prime opportunity for us to publish something in this space. To our knowledge there were none, and the idea surfaced. We decided that day to try our hand at sharing our years of expertise with the world, and this is the result of that work. When writing this book, we wanted to provide an accessible guide that anyone could use to optimize the most critical time of the day.  Every time the sun rises, so do new opportunities to grow, develop and improve. We want readers to feel confident in establishing a routine that will help them master their mornings and lead to the life they desire.

In our preparation for writing this book, we recognized that books on this topic lacked scientific rogue and often told an incomplete story of how to make each morning better and more productive with the simple, scientifically based brain hacks. The one thing that we found lacking though was the bottom-up approach of helping the reader understand how the human brain functions in the morning and throughout the day. Instead of taking the time to describe how all of the pieces fit together, everyone seemed more interested in writing a quick solution to getting people prepared for life challenges. Other books were a scientific basis embedded in a practical plan to better living and healthier productive days. We focused on the big picture and provided the details on how to achieve a more successful holistic life. We decided that this was the way we wanted to address this book.

Lastly, I wrote this book because we are very passionate about the topic. We sincerely believe that managing your brain and body is the way of the future. We genuinely think that, once you get a glimpse of the big picture, you’ll change the way you look at your body systems. The Morning Mind simplifies living better from sunup to sundown, helping sleepyheads silence the fear-driven reptile brain, “the Lizard,” and wake up “the Wizard, the part linked to thinking and imagination. The Morning Mind is a guidebook to achieving better mornings through solid routines. The book revolves around the idea that productive early mornings are imperative and that “building a solid foundation for beginning your day will help you achieve success in every area of your life. The modern lifestyle puts 99% of us in an ‘unbalanced state, but with the right information, we can add stability to our lives. That information can be found in The Morning Mind, as the Carters aim to put the everyday person’s brain and body back into balance through simple steps to supercharge a morning routine, resulting in productivity and enjoyment throughout the entire day.

The Story Behind Love and the Mystery of Betrayal by Sandra Lee Dennis

I have written two psychological/ spiritual books now, one published by a traditional publisher and one self-published with a small local press. When I began writing, I did not expect either of these writing projects to turn into books.

You might be surprised to learn, even after writing two books, that I have never considered myself a writer.  Rather, I have always had an avid interest in inner realities.  I have been a teacher, a researcher and explorer of the stuff of inner life— a “phenomenologist,” some people would say.

In fact, after my first book was published, I swore I would never write another.  Putting a nonfiction book together that arises from your own depths is a consuming and arduous labor. But, I was wrong!

My last book was born after my long-time partner abruptly left me without notice a few weeks before a big wedding we had planned.  The impact of this shock surprised me: it took me down into the worst suffering of my life.
The more the pain intensified (it worsened as time went on), the more I was compelled sit at my desk and write. There I would hear the voice of a wise, warrior woman translating the disbelief, outrage, hurt and grief into words. Her words poured out onto the page with insights and wisdom that soothed, comforted and guided me.  In this way, within a few months I had more than 200 pages.
Reading over what had come through in this “flow” writing, a nagging sense of responsibility welled up to share what I had been given with others. But I immediately thought, “Oh, no, that means another book!?!”  Four years and six edits later, sure enough, I had Love and the Mystery of Betrayal in hand.
In this book, writing from the inside out, I dive into the existential shock and spiritual crisis of the little understood impact of deception and betrayal. Making this descent accessible to others —  the shame, the madness and the mystery of a heart and soul broken by betrayal — was a labor of love.

As Emily Dickinson said, “If I can save one heart from breaking… If I can ease one life the aching/ or cool one pain… I shall not live in vain.”  I wish for this book to find its way into the hands of those of you who are trying to come to terms with and to heal the shocking reality of betrayal in your world.

When you are a writer, feedback and reviews offer a kind of lifeblood and encouragement after months and years spent alone writing. Since the original publication of the book, I have received so many gratifying notes and reviews, that I have released a second edition to help the book make it into the hands of more people.

To help even one other person, this is why we write!  I can still remember after one of my first reviews, realizing — that is it: this is the reason I wrote this book! To touch even one person this way was worth all that time and effort.

I want to share it with you:   “This is the first time I have written a review, and from the bottom of my heart, Sandra, THANK YOU… Two years ago, my husband of 18 years abandoned me and my two children…I have read many, many books on infidelity, and your book stands out. I am buying copies for family and friends so they can finally understand what I am grappling with. For anyone who has been through betrayal…this would be the first book I recommend people read.”

The Story Behind The Old Man's Request by Joab Stieglitz

I have been writing all my life. I wrote stories for myself as a child. In college, I excelled at classes that had papers (as opposed to tests). In my various jobs in the computer networking world, I have gravitated toward writing tasks, such as requirements, training, and policies and procedures.
I get my ideas from a variety of sources. I am a big role-player and have written numerous adventures, character backgrounds, and other material for a variety of genres. I took notes of the
games I ran over the years, and ideas from some of those became the inspiration for my books. I am a history buff, especially with respect to the 19th and 20th centuries, which also provides inspiration, as do the books I read or listen to.
I am an avid audiobook listener, and I have listened to nearly 200 of them since I started with Audible in 2011. I am currently listening to the audiobook of Forebodings, Conquerors of K'Tara: Book I, by L. A. Di Paolo, which is an epic fantasy featuring amazing world building. I’m reading City of Woe by Chris Ryan, a gritty cop drama that provides a compelling and believable look at the life of two detectives who seem to get saddled with the weird cases.
I enjoy a wide variety of genres ranging from George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman series to Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther mysteries, and the Napoleonic war dragon Temeraire series by Naomi Novik to the Titus Crow stories of Brian Lumley.
Writing and publishing a novel had been a life goal. I had started writing a Tolkeinesque journey tale in the 90’s in dribs and drabs “when the muse hit me.” Twenty-five years and 300 pages later, that story had changed in terms of plot, tone, and style. I considered revising or even restarting it, but instead I decided to start fresh with another idea that had been on the shelf all that time.
So I sat down and wrote one chapter a week. Using that method, I published my first book novels in six months from start to finish. The second book came out six months after that, and the third six month after the second. The constraints of my day job reduced my time over the last year or two, so book four took about nine months, and book five is still in progress.
My books are all available in Kindle, paperback, and audiobook formats on Amazon. Readers can also follow me at joabstieglitz.com.

The Story Behind My Last Baggage Call Aboard Air Force One by Glenn W. Powell

I had always wanted to write about my journey from being a teenage father to enlisting in the military. My struggle with leaving everything behind that I knew and loved in order to provide a better life for my son. From the moment that I raised my hand, I knew that I would make the military
my life long career.  Never in my wildest dreams could I have predicted that I would rise in the ranks and end up working in the White House for three Presidents.  During my twenty-year career, I would experience things that the average person would not see nor do. Along the way, I would also find the love of my life to share this incredible journey.

For many years I had played with the idea of writing my book.  It wasn’t until I received some news in December 2013 that would turn my world upside down, pushing me to finally put my thoughts down to paper.  The news that I had received was that I had Stage 3 kidney cancer.  Like most people, you hear the word cancer and you automatically think the worst.  How could I have cancer when I didn’t have any symptoms?  Being in the military, you have to stay fit. At that moment, I decided that if God pulled me through this, I wouldn’t waste any more time and write this book.  I wanted to ensure that I left a legacy for my family. I didn’t matter to me if the book was popular or not.  I had to get my story out and maybe, just maybe, inspire someone who feels like their life is meaningless.

The way that I had got my book published was through a good friend of mine, Janice Kearney. I worked with her during the Clinton administration and she was his diarist.  I started telling her about what I wanted my book to be about.  She told me that I had an inspiring story to tell and agreed to assist me with my journey.  She also told me that it wouldn’t be easy.  The entire process took one year.  There were many face to face meetings, phone conferences, and countless emails.  All of the hard work paid off with a book that I and my family can be proud of.

The Story Behind Drewsilla the Shelter Puppy by Karen Carew Oakes

I started writing childrens stories in my 30’s. The stories were inspired by the events in my childrens lives. My children experienced bullying, divorce, and the death of a classmate. The story Drewsilla the Shelter puppy is also a true story. My daughter and son inlaw were looking for a dog to adopt.   Drewsilla, chose them as they walked by her cage.  Drewsilla, was a very shy, withdrawn dog. She and her litter mates had been abandoned with their mother who had been hit by a car and left to die. The puppies were taken to the local shelter to be taken care of.
They chose to go to the local shelter to give a dog a new chance in life. They had done their homework and went to the shelter looking for a dog that appeared on the website for the shelter. They never actually saw the dog that they had come for.

The reason I chose to have Drewsilla’s story published was due to a chance meeting of a local established author. This author had come to my place of business celebrating her new book that had just been released. We struck up a conversation that changed my life.

I had told her that I had written a series of childrens books and attempted to publish them 20 years ago. I had received good reviews but at that time most publishers were not using outside writers.

Drewsilla was the most current story and I decided to take a chance and self publish.
I chose Archway Publishing. I used actual photos for the illustrations and they captured the characters very accurately. I included actual photos at the end of the book of Drewsilla with her new family.

This book was my way of testing the waters. I am thrilled with the way it came out. I was able to tell my story on a local program, Great Day SA, here in San Antonio, Texas.

I am working on illustrations for my series as of this writing.

About the Book:

When Drewsilla and her siblings are tiny puppies, an accident steals their mother away. A kind stranger rescues them and takes them to a shelter, where the staff works around the clock to care for the pack of newborns. Soon, her brothers and sisters begin to thrive. Drewsilla has a beautiful black coat, intelligent eyes, and ears that stand straight up.

Drewsilla, though, is scared. She seems afraid of everyone and everything and hides in the back of her cage when families come to visit. As her friendly siblings each get adopted, lonely Drewsilla remains. The staff even worries that she might never find a home. Then, one day, something amazing happens.
The Johnsons come to the shelter to look at another dog and see Drewsilla, who miraculously finds the courage to stop hiding and say hello. All shelter dogs deserve the chance to find a loving family, and this is the true story of Drewsilla -- how she overcomes her fears, finds her family, and gets a second chance at a happy life.

The Story Behind Material Things by Larry Spencer

I believe the term goes something like this— “Truth is stranger than fiction.” Real life can be more remarkable than invented tales. Research tells me this old expression was invented by Byron, who used it in Don Juan (1833). I know, a useless fact. Anyway—it certainly relates to me living on the edge in Los Angeles in the nineteen sixties and seventies and being able to witness and tell this story
firsthand.

As advertised, this book was conceived and raised from true-life events. This was, I thought, a story I always wanted to tell and a story I thought should be told. It had rattled around in my subconscious for years but I never could gather enough time or courage to tell it without being bias or seemingly outlandish.

See I virtually lived this story.  I am a product of the 60s and 70s. And since we’re confessing inspiration—I just happen to be one of the characters who played an integral part as one of the owners in the Jon’s Drawer clothing store— A venue that is also a central character in the theme and prides itself as being the first to sell bellbottom jeans to the masses in Southern California. Maybe I’m cheating because I didn’t have to go far to come up with exciting, quirky, loveable, despicable people to portray in this cast of head shaking characters. I didn’t have to conjure up love interests because I knew them on a personal level. I didn’t have to make up the intrusion of the FBI and the Mafia because I was met and threatened by them face-to-face, while I nearly peed my pants.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told to pass this slice of life on and let people hear for themselves what went on in that pop-culture era in Southern California.  It was fascinating, and when I looked back and while I was jotting down recollections, it was hard to believe I lived it. It was surreal how three semi-normal guys who just wanted to sell jeans were swallowed up in a fervor of sex, drugs and murder.

So I took a break from my twenty-year career as a TV comedy and feature film writer and tried my hand at writing novels. My first was The Tipping Point of Oliver Bass. I was told by reviewers that as a character, Oliver toed a curious line between Holden Caulfield and Philip Marlowe. I must’ve been doing something right, so I decided to dust off the cobwebs in my subconscious and take a crack at Material Things. To use an overworked cliché—the rest is history.

I self-published my first book and swore I’d never do that again because the result was less than an overwhelming success. It sucked actually. But failing to sign with a major publisher, I once again hit the self-publishing trail —but I think I’m taking more of a serious route this time and utilizing, sights, sounds and literary avenues that are offered to me that I didn’t take advantage of the first time.  Fingers crossed. Right?

About the Author

LARRY SPENCER published his first novel, The Tipping Point Of Oliver Bass in the summer of 2017. A story that covered the life of a pathologically arrogant, wealthy young man who sets off on a journey of self-discovery, family tragedy, and sexual conquest in a modern California noir backdrop.   Spencer has been a Writer’s Guild of America member since the late 70s, having written and produced a multitude of highly successful TV shows, which culminated into writing several feature films. He was then encouraged to pen his second book, Material Things, a story based on true events that takes place in the 60s &70s and tackles organized crime, drugs and embezzlement during a time when bellbottom pants ruled the fashion scene.  He lives in Valley Village, California.

Visit his website at www.larryspencerauthor.com.

About the Book:

Larry Spencer’s riveting, interlocking narratives circle the lives of Matthew Street, Jon Lewis and Christopher Styles, in a 1970s California backdrop that takes them from owning and operating a fashionable clothing boutique into the gripping world of an FBI under cover operation, drug trafficking, prostitution and a nefarious criminal element, that brings to light a Mafia contract killer, who’s out to bump off a stoolie in their midst.

Material Things is based on true events surrounding the store that introduced bellbottom jeans to a hip Southern California crowd and how it became, not only a cottage industry but also an arena fraught with danger and moral strife that put the store and it’s owners under close scrutiny after an alarming number of felonious activities surface.

The climax is anything but conventional as Matthew, Jon and Christopher are confronted with a life threatening reality that they never imagined could happen just by selling bellbottom pants.
